We, at Scalenut, are thrilled to announce that we have raised a $3.1m funding round led by Saama Capital & Amit Singhal (Former Senior VP of Google and a Philanthropist).
We had previously raised $400,000 in seed funding led by Titan Capital, First Principles VC, AngelList, Abhishek Goyal, and other leading angel investors. In early 2022, we launched our own SaaS platform for public use and, in the past six months, have witnessed 10x revenue growth.
I find myself thinking back to September 2021. We were in the middle of a workathon that was held at Gaurav’s (One of the co-founders of Scalenut) house before the launch of our MVP. This was a team of some 10-12 members, working relentlessly on solving as many bugs as possible before the launch, and then addressing issues that arose after the launch. Fueled by caffeine, power naps, and a common goal to create something that provides value to the users. The room had electric energy that was incredibly contagious. It was a sight to behold!
That workathon, in hindsight, has become a tremendous source of inspiration and also an anchor in time to remind us of how far we, at Scalenut, have traveled from our humble beginnings. It has been an incredible journey so far and I’ve had the privilege of sharing this journey with my Co-founders - Gaurav, and Saurabh.
Well begun is half-done
Gaurav, Saurabh, and I have been leading digital startups in various industries, ranging from consumer goods to SaaS businesses, for a decade each. The synergies that have formed by virtue of pooling our varied experiences have been quite nifty. What Gaurav and I bring to the table is the experience of building business functions in leadership roles; Saurabh on the other hand has been a product leader and is the go-to guy to bring BRDs to life.
When we were starting out, we looked at an endless list of problems that we wanted to solve - ranging from the pets industry, health-tech, D2C brands for chocolates, etc. A common denominator that emerged out of these discussions was the struggle that brands faced in scaling their content marketing.
Discovering this common problem across brands and industries had piqued our interest and then, Covid happened. Covid put fuel to the fire of the problem of scaling content marketing and the need for it. It created massive digitization opportunities. We saw this as a huge opportunity, and we were more than happy to embrace it.
That’s when we decided to build a Saas platform to help brands scale their content marketing with ease. Why content? It seemed like an obvious choice for a couple of reasons. As I mentioned above we realized that content marketing is a common problem that is industry agnostic. Also, if businesses have to grow sustainably, they need to drive massive organic traffic (like Hubspot) rather than spending a fortune on paid marketing. Furthermore, a cluttered industry with no good solutions made it even harder for businesses to do that. And that’s what we wanted to change.
Thus, Scalenut was born.
A roller-coaster that only goes up
Our very first product was a Talent Marketplace, which was born by marrying the pain points (sustainable online growth) with opportunity (technology and demand for content) in December 2020.
During the first phase (the first six months), we worked with over 100 SMBs and connected with experts worldwide to dig a little deeper. Simultaneously a lot of advancements in technology were happening in content - Open AI & GPT-3 to be precise.
After 6 months of research, we started building our platform. Again, marry pain points with opportunity, and we rolled the MVP of our SaaS offerings in September 2021.
After receiving massive love and positive feedback, we introduced our offerings to a wider audience in January 2022. In the last 6 months, we have grown 10x in revenue. Most of our traffic comes organically. Over 100k users have used the platform within 6 months of the launch. It’s crazy!
The cherry on the cake was when we received the G2 Summer Leader Award in the overall content creation category and AI writing category of 2022. When we achieved the G2 Summer Leader milestone, we thought…this is it. We are at the peak. But after some introspection, a realization hit. That this is just the basecamp. We are yet to conquer the summit. And with our arsenals replenished with this funding round, we are definitely on our way!
A Glimpse into the Future
We aim to become a $10 Mn ARR business within the next couple of years. We intend to build an entire content suite for businesses. The current market is fragmented and does not offer much in terms of scaling content marketing.
Where our current focus has been on the Planning, Research, and Creation part of the content journey, we will be launching other new products to complete the entire content cycle.
In terms of the market, as of now, we focus on dominant English-speaking nations, but we will soon be expanding to other geographies.
